Warwick is home to notable historical events including being the location where the first violent act against the British occurred in the American Revolutionary War. In what is now referred to as the Gaspee Affair, local patriots boarded the British HMS Gaspée, a ship enforcing the Stamp Act in the Narragansett Bay, and fired the ship's commanding officer.
